    Maya Deren (Ap – Octo ), born Eleonora Derenkowska (Ukrainian: Елеоно́ра Деренко́вська), was a Ukrainian-born American experimental filmmaker and important promoter of the avant-garde in the s and s. Deren was also a choreographer, dancer, film theorist, poet, lecture. Maya Deren – director and editor, working in collaboration with Hella Heyman, her camerawoman, and the editor and filmmaker Miriam Arsham, who was her longtime assistant. Deren also shot footage in Haiti between and about which she wrote a book, Deren is also the author of An Anagram of Ideas on Art, Form and Film.

    Despite her short life (Deren died at the age of 44 in New York), she left behind a small but hugely important body of work, with several landmark avant-garde short films, two books and many writings in the Village Voice and other publications. Most of Deren’s films are available on YouTube, albeit in most cases with added music by her admirers.   A STUDY IN CHOREOGRAPHY FOR CAMERA () is the third dance film by Ukrainian-born American experimental filmmaker, Maya Deren (29th April –13th October ) and her most accomplished. In this short black and white composition lasting just over two minutes long, she celebrates the principle of the power of movement.
